Why We Exist
“When my son forgot how to write his Chinese name, I knew I had to act.”
I’m a Hong Kong mum raising a child in the UK.
When my son was just six years old, he could recognise over 1,000 Chinese characters and whip up a 150-word essay with ease — all of which I had taught him myself. But just a year after we moved, he had forgotten 800 of them.
When he started forgetting how to write his Chinese name, I didn’t just feel sad — I felt angry. Not at him, but at how quietly we were all losing something sacred: our kids’ connection to identity, family heritage, and their unique edge in navigating between East and West.
That moment lit a fire in me — not of guilt, but of purpose.
I created Little Lions Rising to help my son fall in love with Chinese again — not through rote learning, but through magic. Through story, adventure, characters he could care about. Through laughter and curiosity, not pressure or guilt.
But very quickly, I realised this wasn’t just about him. And it wasn’t just about Hong Kong kids either.
It was about sharing a piece of the world I grew up in—the values, the warmth, the little things that made life feel grounded.
The way we cared for each other. The way we adapted, worked hard, and still found reasons to laugh. That gentle strength that runs through our families and our communities.
Little Lions Rising is my way of passing that on— for our children, and for anyone who’s curious about the heart of Hong Kong.
